The Chiropractic Neurologist

Chiropractic Neurologists are board-certified specialists in non-drug, non-surgical care for those with neurologically based health problems. There are many conditions people suffer from that are in this broad category:

  • Learning and Attention Disorders
  • Headaches
  • Vertigo
  • Pain syndromes
  • Developmental disorders
  • Nerve injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Head injury or stroke
  • Movement disorders

These are just a few. People with all of these concerns and more have been helped by Chiropractic Neurologists. This specialty certainly cannot offer a cure for all who present with these problems, but nearly all do improve - some profoundly.

What does a visit to the Chiropractic Neurologist involve?

A history is taken; this includes your current concerns, past health, lifestyle, job and family.

Next a thorough neurologic exam is performed. The aim of this is to test as many areas of the nervous system as possible. The doctor wants to know if:

  • An area is working or not
  • It is stable, unstable or sluggish
  • It can be improved by using more healthy areas
  • It can be used to stimulate areas needing improvement

This is followed by therapeutic trial. This means a possible treatment is used, and then you are retested immediately to see if it will work.

What are the types of treatment?

Nerve cells need fuel and stimulation to thrive. Treatment is aimed at providing these. It includes activities that have been shown either by scientific research, past case study or immediate pre and post testing to activate nerve cells. This may include:

  • Specific adjustments to joints
  • Light, sound, smell, touch
  • Balance activities
  • Breathing exercises
  • Nutritional modification
  • Physical exercises
  • Eye exercises
  • Cognitive exercises

Care is very safe, closely monitored and often fun.

Vertigo & Balance Disorders

EVALUATION

Investigation of the cause and proper treatment of dizziness and balance problems includes a:

  • Thorough history
  • Comprehensive examination
  • Discussion of findings with the patient
  • Therapeutic trial of care on the same visit
  • Re-examination to evaluate the probability of success of the therapeutic plan
  • Narrative report including detailed recommendations

Vestibulo-ocular (rotational and caloric), optokinetic and stability activities may be performed as part of the examination. Performance of these activities in specific patterns may be incorporated into the rehabilitation progression.

TYPES OF CARE

Care does not involve drugs or surgery. Drawing on rehabilitation methods from multiple disciplines, care is very individualized.

  1. Specific Chiropractic adjustments designed to change signaling from joint receptors
  2. A wide variety of visual, auditory, optokinetic, vestibular and stabilization activities
  3. Eye movement exercises
  4. Coordination patterning
  5. Cognitive or thought-based exercises
  6. Activities to increase oxygen supply
  7. Modification of home, work or school activities and environments

THE DIFFERENCE

A key element in the success seen with patients who have failed with other types of care is that the rehabilitation is not programmed. It is based specifically on the findings of the patient's exam and immediate response to therapeutic trial. Therapies are constantly evaluated with pre and post testing as the patient progresses.

EXPERIENCE

Dr. Powell has been teaching clinical neurology, with much emphasis on the vestibular and cerebellar systems, to doctors throughout the country for the past EIGHTEEN years. He frequently sees patients who have been referred by other health care providers throughout the Midwest. When coming from a distance, patients are routinely sent back to the appropriate health care provider in their local area with reporting to guide their care. Communication may continue via the telephone or e-mail as the patient progresses.

To arrange for an evaluation, the referring doctor or patient simply calls our clinic at (319) 366-2518.
